Do you consider yourself an INTELLECTUAL? If you spend much of your life focused on your smarts, and making sure others know you’re smart… you may be struggling. Are you?

You are probably very logical and rational. The world of emotions is spontaneous, often illogical and irrational. Emotions can result in many unpredictable behaviors. Dealing with emotions often means entering a world of chaos.

At its core, over-intellectualization is a defense mechanism, protecting a person from dealing with the emotional aspects of situations.

When you overly rely on your intellect and logic when dealing with people (and their emotions), you may face unpredictable outcomes – often negative outcomes. Most issues in society (which is, after all, a collection of people) require you to engage with people – like listening to people’s needs, meeting their emotional and intellectual needs, and building relationships. If you don’t understand people, you don’t understand the world. YOU NEED SOCIAL SKILLS TO SUCCEED IN ANY SOCIETY – your buyers, partners, bosses, etc. are PEOPLE!!!

Successful people know the value of building rapport, mirroring the behavior of others, getting in synch, and building trust with others. They are aware of how powerful emotions are in interpersonal relationships, and are always looking for clues about the emotional needs of others. They leverage their IQ, EQ and social skills to connect with others, and to achieve the outcomes they seek.

Ask yourself: What are your shortcomings when it comes to being in touch with your own emotions, reading the emotions of others, and dealing with emotions (yours and others)? What social skills do you need to develop?

I’m an MIT grad who has spent years thinking about this. I even hired 2 psychologists to dig into this. We researched the reasons smart people struggle to succeed and found that they boil down to 15 basic psychological reasons.

P.S. Many of the impediments to the greater success of many smart people are NON-I.Q. issues.

At MIT, they have CHARM SCHOOL during the January break to help MIT grads develop social skills. You can get a BS, MS or PhD in CHARM depending on how many sessions you attend!! Need CHARM help?

If you know which of those are ‘holding you back’, you can mitigate them to become more successful. We have an assessment to identify your impediments.
